Triethyl citrate (TEC) is a colorless odorless liquid derived from the esterification of citric acid with ethanol. Citric acid is a weak acid found in citrus plants, but industrial production is based on the microbial fermentation of sugars. TEC is a versatile ingredient used in both food processing and cosmetics. In cosmetics, it functions as a pure solvent, deodorizer, perfume fixative, and dilutant. It is safe, non-toxic, eco-friendly, biodegradable, 100% renewable, and a good replacement for phthalates. TEC reduces odor by inhibiting enzymic decomposition of sweat components and by inhibiting bacteria so that they cannot produce odor. It is a pH adjuster, lowering the pH of formulations. This reinforces its deodorizing properties because bacteria do not grow in low pH (acidic) environments. TEC is a natural antioxidant and conditioning agent.
