IPM is a synthetic alcohol derived from the esterification of isopropyl alcohol with myristic acid, a naturally occurring fatty alcohol found in coconut and palm oil. It is a low-viscosity solvent and a versatile cosmetic ingredient with medium spreading properties. In skincare, IPM serves as an absorption enhancer, emollient, texture enhancer, and thickener. It provides a luxurious, non-oily feel to cosmetics and helps high-oil content formulations feel silky rather than greasy. IPM is particularly well-suited for use in body butters, leaving the skin soft and smooth without a greasy residue. It is commonly found in bath oils, perfumes, lotions, creams, shaving creams, mists, and other personal care products like anti-head lice solutions. However, it is comedogenic and may not be suitable for oily or acne-prone skin.
